we trying to install autospinstaller on a single server where SharePoint install will automatically install the SQL express edition behind the screen
it does install sharepoint, prerequisites, binaries and public updates successfully where SQL native client is installed as part of it when it comes to creating the config database the following error is throwed as mentioned below

I even changed the entry <Setting Id="SERVERROLE" Value="SINGLESERVER"/>in Config File

Based on the below error I understand is the SQL for SharePoint is not configured properly
  • Loading SharePoint Powershell Snapin...

  • Checking farm membership for VM-6C22-55DC in "DevCloud13_Config"...

  • No existing farm found.
  • Creating config database "DevCloud13_Config"...

xist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it.

First, AutoSPInstaller doesn't support a single-server install, and second, it's nearly always a bad idea. Just install yourself a Dev or Trial edition of SQL server at minimum, but stay away from the single-server Express installs.

Thanks for your prompt response, when you say "second, it's nearly always a bad idea" what does it mean ? if we have SQL Installed in the box then can Auto installer support single server installation ?

Thanks for again for your valuable feedback...

Yes, having a non-Express version of SQL on the same box is fine (e.g. for Dev), so yes - to be clear, AutoSPInstaller does support such a single-server install, just not the type that installs a non-scalable Express edition as you originally indicated.

Brian thanks a ton for your feedback,

with this entry in config.xml, <Setting Id="SERVERROLE" Value="SINGLESERVER"/>, SharePoint should automatically install SQL express, this is native SharePoint functionality right when you install it manually

In the config-AutoSPInstaller.XML which is generated by Autospinstaller if we have this entry <Setting Id="SERVERROLE" Value="SINGLESERVER"/> doesn't that make SharePoint understand that it should install SQL express. is AutoSpInstall Overwriting this functionality anywhere ?

Can we make autospinstaller script point to config.xml which is in SharePoint binaries folder than point config-AutoSPInstaller ?

I can't really say - AutoSPInstaller was never really designed for this, and even Microsoft would probably advise against this anyhow.
