SP2010 Site Collection creation timesout at first attempt but completes when script is rerun

Installing SP2010 on Server 2008 R2
<RemoteInstall Enable="false">
Using patch version 96239 as this included a fix for CU post August 2012 that we seemed to be experiencing otherwise its the default instances downloaded from the site.

Everything runs through fine until I get to teh site collection, at this point the scipt errors out at AutoSPInstallerFunctions.ps1 when it tries to run the Get-SPSite command and it is timing out. There are associated errors in the event log for Event ID: 8306 Task Category: Claims AUthentication.
This is all in our development environment and I'm half assuming it could be glitchey network problems but I'd like to see if I can set something to work around this so the scripts run in completely first time and also if I need to know anything in case this happens in the live deployment.

Internet talks about changing the wcf timeout settings for web.config @ SecurityToken folder but this isn't in place until after the scripts are running.

If I just re-run the script after the first faiolure it completes and everything goes in fine as well which I find quite strange although obviously there is the benefit that the scripts to complete in the end.

Sorry I've re-adjusted my thinking to allow for the obvious; the site has been created on the first server that goes in - what appears to be happening is that the scrips running on the later servers isn't ablel to identify the existence of this farm and generates a timeout error, upon re-running the script it says the site already exists and moves past the error and completes.

Actually there is no real fix for the August 2012 and beyond CU issue - you can't slipstream anymore for SP2010 with those newer CUs. See:
