How long is this going to take?

Aug 24, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Hi.

I've been running the remote install on three VM's for over 5 hours now and I'm still looking at three black boxes full of blue dots.

Is there any way to determine how far into the process the boxes are and how long's left to go?

The boxes are well resourced (8Gb RAM on the two WFE's and 16Gb on both App servers) and all seem to be quite active (in Resource Monitor).
The CA server completed in only 20 minutes so I was expecting something similar from the other farm members.

I'm losing faith.

Thanks in advance.

If you haven't done so, I recommend that you disable CRL check (i.e. Put it true) if the servers don't have Internet Connectivity. This accelerate binary installation significantly.

Thanks Joseph.

<Disable> 'Certificate Revocation List Check' is set to <true> already and all of the pre-requisits are in place and seem to have installed already so I can't see the lack of internet access being a cause for the delay.

Thanks again for your comments.
Any one else got any ideas what could make this step take over 6 hours?

Can anyone advise if rebooting the 3 remaining servers and running the script again from the one that succeeded would cause any issues.

I'm unable to get the VM's rolled back until Tuesday and this project can't handle that kind of delay.

Thanks again.

What was the last step before the series of blue dots? I've seen tthis happen before if for example the product ID for SharePoint was invalid, leaving an invisible error message on each server session.

Thanks for your response Brian and thanks for the great script.

The directory structure and config files were all created/configured in a central location and then copied over to each server so the media and license key is identical for each build.

I've copied and pasted the contents of one of the servers, still locked log.rtf files from the desktop of the first machine.

Yup that's what I suspected. I supsect the SharePoint binary installation hasn't even really kicked off, but it's stuck on a hidden dialog box (e.g. security warning perhaps)? Anyhow log on to each farm server that's hung, and see if there's a msiexec.exe or setup.exe process that would correspond with the SharePoint binary installation. If so, you could try to end the task and, as a test, kick off the setup.exe manually (to see if the offending dialog box appears). Otherwise as you suggested you could just reboot the farm servers that are stuck, the AutoSPInstaller will just pick up from where it left off and hopefully proceed without any further hangups.

Thanks very much Brian and apologies for the delayed response.

I rebooted all 4 servers in the farm and kicked off the scripted install again from my already configured CA server.
This time the three remote boxes completed without errors.

Thanks again.

I do have a minor issue with the User Profile Sync service not starting but I'll create a new discussion to see if any one else had a similar issue.
