BUG: PerformancePoint Database Rename

Hi All,

It appears that the new database renaming functionality in AutoSPInstaller 2.5 doesn't work if you are using an SQL instance name. The install script returns a the following error...

What happens if you configure the input XML to create/use a SQL alias to point to the instance?

The script created all the other databases on the database server. Once i sent the provision performance point service to false, the script ran successfully.

I would like to find a fix for this.

Note: I am not using the SQL default instance name, but a unique instance name if that matters.

Thanks for the script and everyone's help

Hey guys, I just tried to replicate this, but the rename worked just fine for me. My setup is as follows:

  • Install account has sysadmin on the SQL instance (required if you're attempting this Perf Point DB rename operation)
  • SQL 2008 R2 w/ CU7, set up as an instance (SERVERNAME\DBInstance) on a separate VM than the SharePoint server
  • SQL instance is using a dynamic TCP port
  • I have configured the XML input to create a SQL Alias for this instance. In other words, when the function to rename the DB kicks in, it does so against an alias name (e.g. SQLAlias), not the SQL instance name (SERVERNAME\DBInstance)

Are you guys letting the script set up a SQL alias for you? If not, I'd recommend it - for this purpose, as well as an overall best practice (in case your SQL server server/instance name ever needs to change, you just update the alias).

Let me know if this fixes it,

Brian

Without an alias, I suspect the code that splits the DOMAIN\MACHINENAME is getting confused by DOMAIN\MACHINENAME\ALIAS. I'll have it fixed in the next version I send you, Brian.

Hey Brian/Paul,

Just checking to see if this issue has been addressed... love the script and I nearly ALWAYS use an alias for the SQL instance, however, my current client opted out of doing so....

Thanks guys!

Totally lost track of this... Rick is it still an issue for you or have you completely moved on in the months since you reported it :)
